This week is considered a holy week for Christians. On Sunday, we celebrated Palm Sunday - the event recorded in the Bible where Jesus rode into the holy city of Jerusalem on a donkey, while the crowd waved palm branches at him, and placed them in his path. The people came to understand who Jesus was and greeted him in this way because the symbolism behind the palm leaves indicated victory and triumph. On Friday of this week, Christians celebrate "Good Friday." It doesn't seem so good to those knowing that Jesus was nailed to cross and condemned to death that day - though innocent of all charges formed against him. This happened as a symbol, an innocent lamb was slaughtered as a sacrifice to get forgiveness for sins in the Jewish culture. Recognizing the failing of the legal system, Jesus offered himself to die as the innocent lamb to bring the sinful back to the perfect and loving Father, God. This was victory and triumph. As Jesus said he would, he rose to life on Easter Sunday - appearing to hundreds before his ascent to heaven. As he promised, he returned out of the grave, and showed that he had conquered the very death that entered the world with the first sin of mankind in Adam and Eve's behaviour in the garden. This adds to the goodness of Friday. This is the ultimate victory and triumph. During this beautiful week, a legendary site, holy for many over the course of several centuries burned. And many of us looked on with sadness, but many acted. Human chains saved many precious items, and when the fire stopped, a beautiful site was realized. The cross in the centre of the fire did not burn. The cross, a steadfast symbol for the Christian faith, a symbol that defeats death and darkness of all kinds survived. This, too, is victory and triumph.
